The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has announced 200 learnerships for Trainee Provincial Inspectors as part of its Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) recruitment drive 2025. These learnerships offer an excellent opportunity for young South Africans to train as Traffic Officers and later be permanently employed within the province.

Salary: R193 359 per annum (Level 04)

Training Centre & Placement

  • Training will take place at the Traffic Training College, Pietermaritzburg.
  • After successfully completing the Traffic Officer’s Diploma, candidates must be prepared for placement at any RTI station across KwaZulu-Natal.

Salary Package

  • Starting Salary: R193 359 per annum (Level 04) during the training contract.
  • On successful completion of the diploma, candidates will be appointed permanently as Provincial Inspectors (Level 6).

Duties and responsibilities

Successful candidates will be trained and later responsible for:

  • Enforcing Road Traffic, Public Passenger, and Transport Legislation.
  • Conducting roadblocks, point duty, and traffic control.
  • Safeguarding accident scenes and identifying hazardous road locations.
  • Conducting speed testing operations and issuing notices.
  • Escorting abnormal loads and monitoring overload control.
  • Examining drivers’ licences and vehicles at Driver Licence Testing Centres (DLTCs) and Vehicle Testing Stations (VTSs).
  • Assisting in crime prevention activities and road safety operations.
  • Performing administrative duties in line with RTI operational plans.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered:

  • A Senior Certificate (Matric) or equivalent qualification (NQF Level 4).
  • A valid Code B driver’s licence (manual transmission).
  • No criminal record (SAPS clearance required).
  • A medical certificate (not older than 3 months) proving fitness to perform strenuous exercise.
  • Physical fitness – candidates must pass a State medical examination before appointment.
  • Age limit: Applicants may not be older than 35 years on the first day of enrolment.
  • Must be a South African Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Must be a fit and proper person with strong ethical standards.
