Umgeni-uThukela Water Learnership Programme 2025

Are you a young South African passionate about science, the environment, and improving your community? The Umgeni-uThukela Water Learnership Programme 2025–2026 could be your gateway to a rewarding career in the water industry.

This exciting one-year programme, offered by the Umgeni-uThukela Water Training and Development Department in partnership with EWSETA, is now open for applications. The learnership targets twenty dedicated individuals who have passed Matric (Grade 12) with Mathematics and Physical Science and are interested in building technical skills in Water and Wastewater Treatment.

What You’ll Gain:

Successful applicants will be enrolled in a National Certificate in Water and Wastewater Treatment (NQF Level 2). The programme includes:

• Theoretical and practical training

• Hands-on experience at water treatment plants located in Richards Bay and the Jozini Water Treatment Plant

• Workplace exposure in the North East Region of KwaZulu-Natal

Entry requirements 

To qualify, applicants must:

• Be unemployed

• Have Mathematics and Physical Science at Matric level

• Be under the age of 35

• Reside in rural areas within uMkhanyakude District or uMzimto District Municipality (KwaZulu-Natal)

• Not have completed a qualification at NQF Level 5 or above

• Be a South African citizen

Note: Candidates with disabilities are encouraged to apply. The programme prioritizes rural youth who may not have had access to tertiary education despite their potential.

• Certified ID copy

• Motivation letter (including a short explanation on why you should be selected)

• Proof of residence

• Midterm school report

• A letter from your Traditional Authority Office confirming residence (for those from villages)
