About the SAWS Weather Observations Learnership

The Weather Observations Learnership is a structured 12-month programme conducted at the SA Weather Service Regional Training Centre in Pretoria. During the learnership, participants will receive comprehensive theoretical and practical training in various aspects of weather observation and data collection.

After successful completion of the training, learners may be placed at regional SAWS offices across South Africa. These positions often involve shift work, so a valid driver’s license will be required upon employment.

Learnership Requirements

To qualify for the SAWS Weather Observations Learnership 2026, applicants must meet the following minimum entry requirements:

• Grade 12 (Matric) certificate
• Minimum of 50% (D symbol) or higher in Mathematics (NOT Mathematical Literacy)
• Minimum of 50% or higher in Physical Science
• Minimum of 50% or higher in English

Skills and Competencies 

• Good interpersonal and communication skills
• Computer literacy will be an added advantage
