About the learnership for correctional services

Every year, the South African Department of Correctional Services (DCS) offers people from different communities the opportunity to learnership about correctional services. This scholarship forms part of the government’s national skills development program to create skills and alleviate poverty and unemployment.

The DCS Leadership is open to those with the qualifications required to study the Certificate of Higher Education and Training (FET) in Correctional Services Learnerships (NQF Level 4).

The learnership contains psychological and practical training to contribute to the rehabilitation of the prisoners. As an apprentice, you will be taught how to do this through personal and personal development, secure imprisonment or supervised by a community correctional officer.

This training for rehabilitation services gives you the opportunity to learn the skills and the knowledge, work ethic and attitude you need in rehabilitation programs. Students receive an amount of R3 500-00 per month for internship.

Requirements for Correctional Services Learnership 

There are certain requirements for admission to the learnership:

Basic Requirements

Must be a South African citizen
Must have a standard / grade 12 certificate; or
Have an NQF certificate in education and training (Level 4); or
You have successfully completed the National Certificate in Vocational Studies (NQF Level 4)

Other Requirements

Must be between 21 and 35 years old
Applicants may not have a criminal record (if you have a criminal case, you must provide all the details when applying.)
You must have a strong character
Preference is given to applicants with additional qualifications such as a certificate of trade or career, diploma or degree in security / recovery. Any additional qualifications will not be considered during the tuition fees or for specific salary / income purposes to pay student fees.

FET Certificate in Correctional Services Learnership at DCS

It is outcomes-based learning, and student learning is based on a legally binding agreement between the student, the employer and the service provider.

The one-year transitional learnership program (12 months) also includes the following:

Theory

About 30% of the training will be imaginary. This training will be offered at a DCS accredited college that will be defined by the Department.

The theoretical training will include in-depth training on firearms, defense and physical activity.
This training is compulsory and means that you will remain fully attending college.
Successful applicants receive free accommodation, food, uniforms (field uniform and track) and all training materials during training.

Work Experience

The remaining 70% of the training will be jobs (in employment) taking place at correctional and social reintegration centers / units.

This part of the training will include activities related to victim rehabilitation and safety services.
Students still receive monthly fees for this part of the training, but are responsible for accommodation, food and travel.
The Department of Correctional Services does not pay for home subsidies, housing subsidies, pensions, medical aid, emergency grants or overtime.
Once the student has successfully completed both these theoretical and practical (work) phases, he / she has submitted final proofs (POEs) and successfully obtained external verification through SASSETA, the FET Certificate in Correction Services NQF 4.

A student contract is a legally binding contract and any breach or breach of the terms of the agreement is handled by the Department of Correctional Services in terms of Sections 17 and 18 of the Skills Development Act, 97 of 1998.

How can you apply for DCS learnership?

To apply for a FET Certificate in Correctional Services learnerships, you must complete an application form with your own hand.

You can obtain the form “Application for Admission to Learnership in DCS” at any Office of Correctional Services, or you can download it from the Department of Correctional Services.
The e-DCS website is www.dcs.gov.za under the Forms Team
Once you’re on the site, look up or down the “Forms” link and click on it. Then click on the “Forms for Learnership” link.
Click on the “Study Learning Form” link and the form will be automatically downloaded to your computer
When applying for an apprenticeship, make sure you specify the position of apprenticeship you are applying for (eg DCS Correctional Service Learnership: Gauteng District: Leeuwkop (Ref GP02)
Make sure you sign the application form yourself
Submit certified copies of your certificates and your document (these copies must be certified within the last 3 months – you can do so at any police station)

Please note:

Late or unsubscribed application forms will not be accepted
Forms installed on computers are not accepted
Forms sent by fax or email are not accepted
Remember that you will be responsible for the cost of accommodation, travel and food during your internship. It is therefore advisable to apply for a scholarship in a district or administrative area near your place of residence.

Completed resource request application forms can be mailed (posted) or delivered to the regional commissioner at your nearest administration office. You can find the address and contact details of your nearest management office.
